about the project

The Planning and Assessment Stage of The  Navigating 500: Doddanekundi project is an amalgamation of a Public Transit Wayfinding project conceived by Sensing Local and the SuMA proposal made by Doddanekundi Rising, to improve access to public transit.

The project focuses on a single neighbourhood, takes a neighbourhood-focussed approach i.e. Doddanekundi Area, and its integration with the Bus Priority Lane on the Outer Ring Road.to understanding the typical routes travelled by bus users in the neighbourhood, the challenges faced along the bus journey, and the state of infrastructure along these routes. It aims to and look at assess the experience of taking the bus and proposes solution for all stages along the following stages  from doorstep to destination:which includes bus network and service, infrastructure, information systems, safety, accessibility, and overall user experience at the following stages of the bus Journey

  • First and Last Mile Journeys

  • At the Bus Stop

  • On the Bus Route

Bangalore's Public Transport Crisis

Bangalore’s population has doubled between the 1991 and the 2011 census. This steep increase in its population has also led to an exponential rise in the number of private vehicles on the road, making an increased demand for better and more efficient public transportation systems.. This has placed great strain on the city’s public transport and road infrastructure.

According to the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Bengaluru (2019), almost 48% of total trips are by public transport followed by two wheelers (23.5%) and car/taxi (21%). However, the efficiency and utilisation and use of bus in the city has been declining due to rising private vehicular population in city. There is an urgent need to improve the bus experience for users and increase bus adoption for

non-users to ensure access to sustainable modes of transport in the city.

Outer Ring Road Bus Priority Lane

The Outer Ring Road is a major trunk road in Bengaluru that connects many residential, commercial, and industrial areas of Bengaluru and consequently carries high volumes of traffic, often resulting in vehicular congestion along this route. In November 2020[2], a Bus Priority Lane was implemented along the Outer Ring Road between Central Silk Board to Tin Factory in November by BBMP, BMTC, BTP (Bengaluru Traffic Police) and DULT (Directorate of Urban Land Transport). The initiative aims to improve commute time, reduce vehicular congestion, and encourage the use of the bus as a sustainable mode of transport.

SuMA Proposal

SuMA (Sustainable Urban Mobility Accord) is an initiative by the DULT (Directorate of Urban Land Transport that aims to support communities to improve and encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport in their neighbourhoods. DULT invited applications from resident associations, prominent community leaders, and people’s representatives. Ferns paradise Plot Owners Association from Doddanekundi submitted a proposal and was shortlisted for the 2020 cohort. The proposal for from Doddanekundi Rising comprised an Area Development Plan for Doddanekundi which included:

  • Cycle Lane along Goshala Road

  • Footpath Improvement along Ferns City Road

  • Footpath Improvement along Outer Ring Road

  • Improved Pedestrian Crossings under Doddanekundi Flyover

  • Bicycle Parking at ORR Bus Stops and Yeklgata Lake

  • Community Spaces

  • Improved Bus Shelters
